So, last week I shared how things were going with Stella’s initial transition… we had a REALLY tough transition when she wasn’t eating some of the raw food and raw bones we were giving her. Stella is either just a picky eater, or she knows that the raw food COULD taste better prepared differently.
So when she wasn’t eating some of the raw muscle meats (though now looking back maybe we didn’t force her to try hard enough) we cooked them… we tried ground chicken, ground turkey, ground beef… and oh boy she loved it! Her stomach however… did not. After several days, she did not get any better.
While I am SO incredibly grateful that Stella is well-trained enough to let me know when she has to go potty… waking me up 3 times every night to go to the bathroom for more than a week was EXHAUSTING. After the first couple of days though, I knew it was the cooking of the food, adding grease to the meal, and because it was not raw as we planned, we absolutely should have transitioned to her food change, versus the sudden switch. Having done my research on the raw food, all the literature I read said no transition needed, and it truly wasn’t a problem with the couple of raw things she ate… but cooking it… oy vey!
After 3 or 4 days with no improvement, I had to halt it completely for boiled chicken and rice for almost a week solid. Even when Stella started sleeping all through the night again, I gave her a couple extra days of JUST boiled chicken and rice, and am just now weening her off of the rice.
Here’s how I plan to reintroduce some variety:
After Stella’s just on the boiled chicken for a couple of days, I will test out ground chicken for 1 day, go back to boiled chicken for a couple of days, and see how her stomach reacts. If she’s all good there, I’ll move to beef for one day, see how she reacts by giving her boiled chicken for a few days after, see how she does, and so on. When she can handle these muscle meats (yes, I will try raw again first!) then she’ll be in a much better spot I think!
By the way, SHE LOVES BOILED CHICKEN! Stella’s a very happy girl since we made the switch — Jon says she has more energy and is much more playful during the day. Biggest plus of all- no head tremors since we’ve made the switch 🙂
